Russian Kiryashova wins women's pole vault gold at Universiade

11:30, August 11, 2007

Russia's Alexandra Kiryashova won the gold medal of women's pole vault in a height of 4.40m at 24th Universiade on Friday, extending Russia's dominance in the event.

Russia's Yelena Isinbayeva, Olympic pole champion and world record holder, has been a bit lonely at the top without any serious challenging since the Athens Olympics.

Kiryashova easily overcame 4.40m at first attempt but failed in her last three attempts at the height of 4.55m, while her only competitive rival Kristina Gadschiew of Germany, who vaulted 4.40m in second attempt, failed to clear 4.45m and got the second place.

Nicole Buechler from Switzerland finished third in 4.35m.

The six-day athletics competition at the 24th Bangkok Universiade offers 46 gold medals.
