Brits makes surprise appearance
Posted on 03 August 2007 - 12:55
Okkert Brits, South African record holder in the pole vault who turns 34 later this month, made a surprise appearance at a small meeting for vaulters in Norderney, Germany, earlier in the week.
He recorded 5.40 metres and finished third behind two other athletes who also cleared 5.40 metres.
A rusty Brits did well to succeed at this height - the best by a South African this year - after he had only one other competition just over five months ago in Port Elizabeth.
He also missed the SA Championships in Durban in March.
Alex Straub (Germany) and Daniel Ryland (USA) occupied the first two spots while Brits and Bjorn Otto (Germany) shared third.
A strong wind made conditions for the athletes almost impossible and two leading pole-vaulters, Tim Lobinger (Germany) and Toby Stevenson (USA), failed to clear any height.
