International athletes gather in Daegu

About 60 top international athletes, including Russia's Yelena Isinbayeva, will compete to break world records tomorrow in Korea's third-largest city of Daegu.
They will be attending the one-day international invitational event to be held in Daegu World Cup stadium, which also includes about 70 Korean players.

The event was organized by the Daegu City government and the 2011 Daegu IAAF World Championships Bidding Committee to promote the city's bid to host the 2011 World Athletics Championship.

Isinbayeva, who arrived in Daegu, about 300 kilometers southeast of Seoul, on Monday, holds the world record of 5.01 meters in the women's pole vault.

Another top-tier athlete is Liu Xiang of China, a gold medalist in the men's 110-meter hurdle event at the 2004 Athens Olympics. He holds the world record of 12.88 seconds.

American Lauryn Williams, silver medalist in the Athens Olympics in the women's 100-meter race, will compete against Torri Edwards of the United States, Loulia Gushchina of Russia and Yelena Nevmerzhitskaia of Belarus.

Organizers said this event will be an opportunity for Daegu to prove its capability to host the world's largest athletic games in 2011. Amadeo Francis, vice president of the International Association of Athletics Federations, and two other IAAF board members are scheduled to visit the city for the festival.

The other countries which expressed their intent to host the 2011 event are the UAE, Russia, Croatia, Spain, Sweden, Morocco, the United States and Australia.

Daegu bid committee chairman Yoo Chong-ha expressed confidence about the city's chance of winning the bid, saying the world's sports community gives a positive evaluation on the city's skills and experience in organizing international sports games on a huge scale.

Daegu successfully hosted some matches for the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup and 2003 Summer Universiad. Committee officials said Daegu's rivals are Russia's Moscow and Australia's Brisbane.

The host city will be voted on by 28 IAAF executive members in March next year. IAAF's inspection of candidate cities will be held between December in 2006 and January in 2007.
