The stormy weather, with lightning striking just outside the Ullevi stadium, forced organizers to interrupt several competitions during the morning session.
The men's pole vault qualifying was abandoned, with 18 vaulters allowed to compete in the final, instead of the usual 12.

When the heavy early afternoon rains caused a long delay in the end of Pole Vault qualifying, organizers decided to allow the morning’s top 20 jumpers into Sunday’s final.

Tim Lobinger (GER)
Pole Vault Men Qualification
Very wise decision by the competition management to allow 18 jumpers into the final. I think that was the best solution. The weather forecast until 3 pm was not better, so there was no other chance. It is a rare experience. I hope the height progression will be according to the number of jumpers, that means more moderate.

Rain in Sweden helps Averbukh
By ALLON SINAI
Alex Averbukh enjoyed a piece of good fortune on Thursday when torrential rain helped him book his place in the pole vault final at the European Athletics Championships in Goteborg, Sweden.
The Israeli cleared 5.45 meters in his first attempt, but followed that by failing twice at 5.60m.
Averbukh never got the chance to take his third jump as the downpour forced the organizers to cut short the qualifying and award the top 20 jumpers at the time a spot in the final. The qualification height was originally set at 5.65m or the best 12 performers.
Another failure by Averbukh at 5.60m would have likely left him out of Sunday's final, but thanks to the rain, the 31-yearold Israeli will get a chance to defend his European title from 2002.
