Whitlock Stakes Claim
Sun 18 Jun, 7:11 PM
Janine Whitlock gave the British selectors a nudge ahead of the European Cup by setting a new Welsh All-Comers record of 4.26metres in the pole vault at the Cardiff Games.
The 32-year-old British record holder cleared a season's best height to add 11 centimetres to the previous All-Comers record of 4.15m set by the Australian Bridget Isworth at the same stadium four years ago.
She then went on to have a narrow miss at 4.36 metres. Her winning height moved her from fourth to second on this year's British rankings and convinced her she can overtake Katie Dennison, who heads the rankings with 4.30m.
"I won with 4.40 metres last time and I would love to be given the chance to compete again. Perhaps this will give the selectors a nudge," said Whitlock, whose previous best outdoors this summer had been 4.15m.
"I've changed the length of my pole this summer and that's why I've been struggling a bit. This was much better.
"I'm looking to climb into the 4.60s this season and I can only get better from this. The selectors know I can perform at the big championships and I've also got the European Championships very much in mind."
The qualifying mark for the championships is 4.45m and Whitlock's British record - she has set 39 of them indoors and out - is 4.47m.
