Injury keeps pole vaulter grounded

PAUL Burgess, the only pole vaulter in the world to clear six metres last year, is likely to go into the Commonwealth Games with nothing more than a Perth interclub competition for his final lead-up event.

Soreness in his right calf has prompted Burgess to withdraw from next Friday's Brisbane A-series meeting. As there is no men's vault on the program for the Melbourne meeting on March 9, that leaves local Perth competitions as the only option for Burgess before the Games.

"I've got a bit of a sore calf," Burgess confirmed yesterday, "but it's not the same one as last year."
