Eurojump Göteborg (8-February) - Lobinger 5.82

Unread postby pelle3 » Wed Feb 08, 2006 5:31 pm

Three Swedish records set tonight in front of 7.208 (New record for this event in Scandinavium).

Hanna-Mia Persson and Kirsten Belin tied for the women:s vault victory, with both athletes clearing 4.40m, an improvement on their 4.00m (Persson) and 3.85m (Belin) from last year:s version, and an improvement on Belin:s 4.37m NR which was set in Sätra in 2003.

3.95m: Fanny Berglund fouls out

4.10m: Linda Persson (2005 winner with a 4.20m), Persson, Silke Spiegelburg and Kirsten Belin clear on first attempts.

4.25m: Persson fouls her first. Persson and Spiegelburg clear, with Spigelburg less dominant on her jump than was Persson. Belin clears easily. L. Persson fouls out by running through the pit on attempts #2 and #3.

4.40m (World Indoor Qualification): Persson flies over the bar on first attempt, and sets a new Swedish National Record. Fouls by Spiegelburg and Belin on their first attempts, leaving Persson with the lead. Spiegelburg and Belin foul again at this height, and have one opportunity left to continue vaulting in the competition. Belin clears 4.40m, and =NR with her 4.40m clearance, described as significant. Persson and Belin heading to Moscow next month.

4.50m: Persson:s second attempt was her best, though she was never really near the bar. Belin:s last attempt was very good, but she was unsuccessful at clearing this height.

==================================

The other Swedish National Record was recorded by high-flying Alhaji Jeng, a local athlete competing for Örgryte in Göteborg. Jeng has been on a high since his victory here last year (5.55m) over Lars Börgerling (5.45m), Aleksander Averbukh (5.45m) and Nick Hysong (5.45m).

This year:s meet had a good quality of athletes competing, with a line up of:

21 Fredrik Skoglund 81 IFK Lidingö 5.40 2006
22 Toby Stevenson 76 USA 6.00 2004
23 Alhaji Jeng 81 Örgryte IS 5.75 2005
24 Tim Lobinger 72 GER 6.00 1997
25 Matti Mononen 83 FIN 5.66 2004
26 Derek Miles 72 USA 5.85i 2005
27 Lars Börgeling 79 GER 5.85 2002
28 Gustaf Hultgren 83 Örgryte IS 5.40 2006

The vault began promptly at 19.05 - five minutes after the meet began on TV24 here in Göteborg.

5.20m: Only one vaulter, Fredrik Skoglund, was in the competition at this height, and cleared on his second attempt.

5.35m: Skoglund, Mononen and Miles all fouled their first attempts, with Miles jumping under the bar. Stevenson and Mononen made the height on second attempts. Miles cleared on his third attempt, leaving Skoglund, who fouled his third attempt, last at 5.20m.

5.50m: Mononen barely fouls on his first attempt, while Börgerling makes it easily over. Miles then follows with a foul. Stevenson and then Lobinger foul on their first attempts. Jeng joins company with Bögerling for an attempt at the next height, but barely, as Jeng hit the bar on the way over. Miles becomes the 3:rd over this height on his second attempt. Stevenson answers with a clearance. Lobinger looked best at this height, with a guesstimate of 15-20cm clearance. Mononen joins the club on his last attempt. Bar raises to 5.50m with Jeng and Börgeling co-leaders.

5.65m: Bögerling cleared on first attempt. Jeng:s first attempt was a long foul, with Lobinger very near. Alhaji clears on second attempt - very high over the bar, but nearly knocked it off the crossbar on the way down. Bögerling cleared in first, Jeng in second, all others have only one atempt left. Miles clears on his final attempt.

5.76m: Börgeling and Miles had bad misses on their first attempts. Lobinger fouls first attempt, but was closest to making this height so far. Jeng up next. Jeng clears on his first attempt, takes the lead in the competition, establishes a new PB, and erases Patrik Kristiansson:s four-year-old National Indoor Record (5.75m). No second-attempt clearances from those chasing. Lobinger only one to make it out of the remaining group, clearing 5.76m with substantial margin (!).

5.82m: Lobinger takes first crack at upping his WL (5.81m) with a miss on attempt number one. Jeng:s attempt was thrown off by losing momentum half-way up on his first attempt. Lobinger clears 5.82m on his second, ups his world-leading 2006 best, and, most importantly, takes control of the competition. Jeng could not muster enough to propel him over this height, and ends competition in second place with his 5.76NR.

5.91m: Lobinger fells it, and gets the bar raised up to an even higher height in front of a dwindling paying audience. First attempt was not great, and he:ll have to make some adjustments. Attempt number two was a little better, but not quite what he needs to clear this height yet. Final attempt, Lobinger is down the runway, plants, is up, and kicks the bar out from the crossbar. Good show for us here in Göteborg (and on TV).

Lobinger, Bergqvist Fly High at Eurojump
Thursday 9 February 2006

Göteborg, Sweden - The pre-meet publicity for the 4th edition of "Eurojump" (8-February) in the Scandinavium arena in Göteborg was dominated by the High Jump competitions. But at the actual meet it was the Pole Vaulters that provided the top marks and records to the meet record crowd of 7,208 vociferous spectators.

With 5.82 Lobinger raises his world lead

In the men's event four athletes cleared 5.65 and it took the new World leading mark for 2006 of 5.82 for Tim Lobinger to secure the victory. This because local hero Alhaji Jeng surprised almost everyone with a brilliant first attempt clearance of the new Swedish indoor record height of 5.76.

Lobinger, who seems to compete every other day (and travels on the other days), did not find the consistency in his jumping this time and made no height with his first attempt. On his good vaults, however, Lobinger was technically brilliant and cleared in impressive fashion. But his new World leading mark came in his 10th jump of the evening after having made 5.50 on his second, 5.65 and 5.76 with his third, and 5.82 on his second! Lobinger concluded the evening - and the whole meet - with a pair of decent attempts at 5.91.

Pole Vaulting also opened the meet as the women had to start before the main programme, something that didn't prevent them from providing an exciting competition for the sparse – but enthusiastic – crowd that had come so early to the Scandinavium arena.

World junior record holder Silke Spiegelburg of Germany had the top 2006 mark (4.40) of the field coming into the meet, but had to settle for third as the Swedish duo of Hanna-Mia Persson and Kirsten Belin revived their national record breaking habits of this decade’s early years. Persson improved Belin’s three-year old mark of 4.37 by clearing 4.40 on her first attempt, but remained sole possessor of the record for just a few minutes as Kirsten flew over the same height on her third attempt.
