Vaulter Roslinda seeks another record-breaking feat in her debut

KUALA LUMPUR: Roslinda Samsu has been breaking the national women's pole vault record as regularly as clockwork, having beaten the mark 10 times in the last seven years.

Now, she hopes to further improve on her personal mark in her debut in the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in March.

Roslinda, who is majoring in physical education at the Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), has a personal best of 4.20m which she achieved in a meet in Spain in June during a training stint.

The Kuala Nerang athlete also holds the SEA Games record of 4.10m, which she set in Manila last November.

The 24-year-old Roslinda, the only athlete from athletics to qualify on merit for the Commonwealth Games, said that last year had been an excellent one for her.

“I improved on my personal best a 10th time last year. And I ended my gold medal drought in the Manila SEA Games.

“I hope this year will be another golden year for me. I hope to continue breaking my national records in international meets,'' said Roslinda after training at the Nasional Stadium in Bukit Jalil yesterday.

Her effort of 4.20m surpassed the sixth placing mark of 4.10m of the last Commonwealth Games in Manchester in 2002 but Roslinda has no illusions of being among the medals.

“I am not a medal contender but this will not stop me from going all out to improve on my personal best,'' she said.

Roslinda is among five athletes who will go to Australia for a one month training-cum-competition stint before the Games.

The others are 110m hurdler Robani Hassan, Moh Siew Wei (100m hurdles), Noraseela Khalid (400m hurdles) and high jumper Ahmad Najwan Aqra Hassan.
