Rosalinda Samsu of Malaysia smashed the old women's pole vault record with her effort of 4.10 meters

Vietnamese Le Thi Phuong won the silver and Thai Sunisa Kao-Iad the bronze in women's pole vault, where the old record of 3.90 meters was held by Indonesia's Ni Putu Desy Margawaty.

Filipino Deborah Samson also cleared 3.60 meters but Sunisa took the bronze for making it on her first attempt. Mikaela Santos, the other local in the pole vault final and the RP record holder, was good for only 3.20 meters.

Rosalinda Samsu of Malaysia overcame a light drizzle at the stadium to win gold in the pole vault with a record height of 4.10m, eclipsing the old mark of 3.95m set by Indonesia’s NI Putu Desh Margawaty at the 2003 Games at Hanoi.

Vietnam’s Le Thi Phuong, who finished with a height of 4.00m, took silver and Sunisa Kao-iad of Thailand the bronze at 3.60m.

Apart from their first Games medal from Nungruethai’s bronze, Thailand also won another bronze in the women’s pole vault where Sunisa Kao-iad came third with a leap of 3.60m.

The gold medal and a SEA Games record of 4.10m went to Rosalinda Samsu of Malaysia. Vietnam’s Le Thi Phuong took the silver after clearing 4.00m, also better than the old record.

Roslinda Samsu Soars To First Athletics Gold

GOLDEN JUMP... Malaysia's Roslinda Samsu pole-vaulted her way to win the women's pole vault event at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila. MANILA, Nov 27 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian athletics team got off to a flying start when Roslinda Samsu soared to a new SEA Games record en route to winning the women's pole vault event at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex here Sunday.

Roslinda who has a personal best of 4.20m, set a new SEA Games record of 4.10m to erase Indonesian Margawati Ni Putu's 3.95m mark, set during the 2003 Vietnam SEA Games.

With Margawati not taking part and Thailand's bronze medal winner Sunisa Kao-Iad falling out of the competition when she failed to reach 3.70m, the gold was a toss between Roslinda and Vietnam's Le Thi Phuong.

The polve vaulter from Alor Star who suffered a major disappointment in the 2003 Vietnam SEA Games when she failed to win the gold, got off to a nervy start, when the bar was raised to 4.0m.

She failed her first attempt while Thi Phuong made an impressive start by clearing the height on her very first attempt, but roared on by Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Azalina Othman Said and a small group of Malaysian officials including National Sports Council director Dr Ramlan Abdul Aziz, she managed to overcome the setback in her next attempt.

Looking pleased and clearly inspired by Azalina's encouragement from the terraces, Roslinda cleared 4.10m on her very first attempt and Thi Phuong who had been very promising until that point suddenly buckled under pressure, failing her first attempt.

The Vietnamese later gambled by attempting a height of 4.15m in her remaining two jumps but failed, giving Roslinda the gold.

Though the gold was already in the bag, Roslinda was not contented and raised the bar to 4.25m but despite managing to clear the height with much room to spare, she clipped the bar on her way down, blowing her chance to set a new Asian AAA Championship record.

"It is a great feeling to win and I'm very happy to have contributed a gold medal to the country. More importantly I was able to overcome the disappointment of the Vietnam games," said Roslinda who ran towards Azalina and Chef-de-Mission to give them a big hug.

Azalina who was scheduled to attend a lunch hosted for the athletes by her ministry, even delayed her departure from the stadium and praised the commitment shown by Roslinda and the other athletes.

"She had already won the gold and could have chosen to retire but she went on to try and raise the bar higher. This is a very positive attitude that is required of athletes," she said.

ATHLETICS: Roslinda can soar to golden heights

Nov 27:
ASIAN CHAMPIONSHIP bronze medallist Roslinda Samsu is set to provide the nation’s first gold medal this morning at the Rizal Memorial Track and Field Stadium, even before the 23rd Philip- pines SEA Games is officially declared open.
Hours before the region’s big- gest sportsfest is declared open at the Luneta Park by Philippines President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Roslinda is expected to leap to the gold in the women’s pole vault in the absence of Indonesia’s defending champion Ni Putu Desy Margawati.

By virtue of her national mark of 4.20m, Roslinda – who hails from Padang Terap, Kedah – is among eight athletes identified by the Malaysian Amateur Athletics Union (MAAU) as gold medal prospects.

The 23-year old Roslinda, who cleared 4.10m on her way to the bronze medal at the Asian meet in Incheon, South Korea, in September, is hotly tipped for the gold as Indonesia have not registered a single entry for the event.

Roslinda’s stiffest competition could come from Vietnam’s Le Thi Phuong, who has a personal best of 4.05m.

A member of the Gemilang 2006 squad, Roslinda is bound for greater heights, according to her coach, Guennadi Potapovich.

Athletics team manager M. Iya- ru believes Roslinda will deliver the gold to set the tone for her compatriots.

“We are indeed counting on her to start our athletics campaign on a high note,â€Â

Good final day for Thailand

Still, the Thais weren't completely outclassed. They achieved a 1-2 in the men's Pole Vault with Amnat Kunpadit (4.90m) and Sompong Saombankuay (4.80m), ahead of Philippines’ bronze medallist Emerson Obiena (4.60m).
