Akmar and Alia ready to deliver

By LOGANATH VELLOO
PENANG: Nor Akmar Fatah and Alia Syahira are confident of handing Selangor a one-two finish in the Under-18 girls' pole vault event of the national schools (MSSM) athletics championships.

Selangor will be going into the 47th edition of the championships, which begin today at the City Stadium here, looking to break Sarawak's stranglehold on the overall champions' title.

And the two 17-year-old girls from the Bukit Jalil Sports School want to help Selangor achieve the target by dominating in the pole vault event.

MSSM defending champion Nor Akmar, who is also the national junior champion, will start as the favourite for the gold medal.

TRAINING HARD: Alia Syahira gears up for the 100m hurdles event in the MSSM Championships in Penang beginning today. She will also start among the favourites in the pole vault event.
She shattered the meet record of 3.30m held by Roslinda Samsu with a leap of 3.40m in Seremban last year.

And now, she is gunning to better the mark and impress the national selectors.

“I want to sign off from the schools scene with another gold medal. It would be good if I can better the 3.60m mark, which is my personal best in training this year,â€Â
