KATE Dennison and Steve Lewis have backed themselves to set new national pole vault records in the next fortnight.

Both will travel to this weekend's SPAR European Team Championships in Bergen before looking to secure their places at next month's European Championships at the Aviva UK Championships in Birmingham.

Dennison has already broken her own record nine times and believes she's in the shape to better her 4.60 metre best from last year's Pedro's Cup in Poland, especially after clearing 4.50m on her season's debut at the IAAF Diamond League meeting in Rome.

"I won the national title last year with a new record of 4.57m so it would be amazing if I could so the same again this year," she said.

"I've had a really great indoor season which culminated in winning the Aviva UK Indoor Championships.

"I had a great year last year, bettering my personal best a total of nine times and finishing in sixth place at the World Championships in Berlin. I'm hoping I'll be able to perform just as well, if not better, this year.

"The European Championships are my main focus at the moment and it would be a dream come true to medal there."

Lewis, who will be seeking to upgrade his 2006 Commonwealth Games bronze in Delhi later this year, is also hopeful of bettering his 5.72m best.

And after spending the winter training with close friend and world champion Steve Hooker, he claims to be in the shape to improve on his seventh place in last year's World Championship final.

"I just missed out on the national title last year on count back so this year I'm hoping to go one better and win," he said.

"My goal for this summer is to break the British pole vault record and make the podium in Barcelona."
