Young Vaulters--Best of the Rest

The first replies I received to “Best of the Best” asked whether I had similar stats for boys and why there were no indoor marks on my lists.

The answer to the first of these is that I file my data almost entirely from Mirko Jalava’s world deep lists <tilastopaja.org>. Although he does keep very deep men’s lists (661 vaulters in 2007, the last year he used 4.90 as minimum for inclusion), even this wide survey rarely includes vaulters in the ages 11-17 range I have chosen for study as “young vaulters.” (For example, only one 17-year-old boy in the 2007 list and none younger). The question did send me searching for other sources recording boys bests in the 11-17 range. I think I’ve discovered one such in the work of Dominique Eisold, and will give you further details when I’ve had time to compare our procedures and differences they may produce.

Secondly, I've never constructed summaries that combine indoor and outdoor marks. Mirko does publish indoor marks that are nearly as complete as his outdoor ones (His 2008 indoor list for women was nearly 500 deep.), but I have always resisted combining indoor and outdoor marks because many good vaulters (and especially younger ones) have little or no opportunity for vaulting indoors. I just don't think it fair to combine marks where there are those differences in opportunity to participate. If you think differently, feel free to construct the age lists your way: Mirko has archived both indoor and outdoor lists since 1996. The archived lists and the full current ones are available only to subscribers, but you'll find lots of useful information available to website visitors, including full results of recent meets and the season's Top 20.

In my correspondence with Dominique, I’ve learned that he does combine indoor and outdoor marks in his age records. That does make a considerable difference in representation of a few vaulters—among the women, most notably Ekaterini Stefanidou of Greece, and even making room as a 17-year-old Yelena Isinbayeva, with an indoor 4.45m. Again, I’ll give you some comparisons of my list of girls’ age records with his, when I’ve had time to work through those.

For now, though, I’d like to follow my “Best of the Best” list of age record holders with a “Best of the Rest” list of the top 20 vaulters at each age.
