Pulled back muslce problem

Unread postby ACvault » Mon Jul 24, 2006 8:03 pm

Ok so a few weeks ago I was at pole vault camp and I was doing some rope vaulting on the trainer that teaches you to get inverted. A couple hours after that my upper right back started hurting and I was getting a little dizzy. The trainer said the tip of my scapula was touching my back lung when I breathed and he said it would heal up soon and to take advil. I stuck it out for the next two days of camp because I didn't want to miss out on the oppurtunity. When I got back home I started having minor trouble with a tight chest and pain in the back. My school trainer said I pulled a muslce so I rested for about a week or so. I went to run some speed today and I went to work out and while I was doing some swings and I was going up I felt this sudden pain right in the same place from before. Right now it doesn't hurt really bad, just when I breathe deep. I took and advil and iced it, so is that all I can do and is this injury really severe? I didn't go to a doctor or anything before when it was hurting, I just don't really know what to do.

hmmm i would guess you originally stressed a minor tendon from one of your back muscles to your scapula... just a hunch because when you start a new kind of exercise you havent done before, you may have the muscle groups for it but it is putting stress on tendons you arent used to putting stress on.... so you wont feel it right away. Then im not sure what it is like for back injuries with you, but when i hurt mine in football, whenever you stress it afterwords you kind of lose your breathe. It is either a tendon or a muscle, however. I would say if you rested a week and it hurt again its most likely a tendon. This means.... you should keep icing and take ibuprofen or any swelling reducer.... everyday. I would suggest a week of nothing, then start stretching your back and do supermans on the floor to strengthen it for another week. After that, try hanging from rings and see if it bothers you. From there, build up slowly. If you feel any signs of soreness or stress again keep the ice on it. Thats probably along the lines of what a doctor would tell you, but i would DEFFINITLY get in to see a doctor if you can.... if nothing else just to have them tell you exactly how long to rest. good luck!

I'll be seeing a doctor in the next couple of days, I need to get a physical for sports anyway.

I pulled a lower back muscle doing roman dead lifts, then I kept pole vaulting on it and formed 5 stress fractures on my L5 ? vertibra, and had to sit out 3 games of the football season. Lesson learned:don't vault while injured, back injuries are SERIOUS.
dsm'er for life, even if I want to quit...
