spiral fracture on the ankle (fibula)

Unread postby sooch90 » Wed Dec 19, 2007 6:52 pm

I spiral fractured my fibula =(

sigh, so I'm out for indoor, and maybe even outdoor. The doctor said about 3 months for recovery, but when I'm "recovered" how much vaulting do you think I'll be able to do or should do? At the end of 3 months, outdoor track will just have started, so do you guys think I'm out for the rest of the school year?

thanks!

blah, it was my fault. I was doing a 3 left run- plant- take off drill in to the sand box. I was really trying to focus on initiating my plant a step early because usually I'm a step late, so it felt kind of awkward. Then I ran up and planted in to the sand, which I stupidly didn't rake and clear of pits and holes. The pole for some reason didn't plant in to the sand (the sand was probably compact from people stepping on it and it was cold) and instead it slid out in front of me. I was caught off guard in the air, and I'm not exactly sure what happened, but I think my feet went out infront of me, and my take off leg then bent back behind me (kind of like a quad stretch) and I landed with my ankle twisted and under me).

=/

Lesson learned: ALWAYS RAKE THE SAND

But these things just happen.

Hey guys, it's been a couple weeks now since I broke it, and it's getting better. So, a couple more weeks with a cast and then some time to rehabilitate and hopefully I'll be back by March in time for outdoor track.

Do you guys have any advice on getting myself back in to pole vaulting? I should probably start working on training other muscles, but when I start vaulting again, how do I get over the atrophy of my left leg (my take off leg!)? Any other advice on getting back to vaulting?

all right thanks a bunch!

Make sure you strengthen it!!!! When i really did my ankle in and i regret not getting it as strong as i should of. I was in a rush to get back to practicing... HUGE mistake!! It has been over a year and i still cant squat, and it is swollen all of the time!!! Make sure you are ready when you come back! And dont over do it... i tried to high jump right away and it was aweful pain!!!!

thanks for the advice guys, I just wanted to let you know that I got my cast off! Everyone had been telling me that I would have a cast on for 6 to 8 weeks, but I got mine off at around 4 weeks, which rocks!

So now I'm in this gigantic air cast boot... which is pretty ridiculous. I feel like transformer with this thing on, but it's cool. I can start putting some pressure on it next week, and then I'll hopefully begin some rehabilitating after that.

thanks again!
