First Meet Preparation

Unread postby LHSpolevault » Sun Nov 26, 2006 6:05 pm

My first meet of the season is coming this Saturday, and I'm a little boggled as to what I should do for the week to get myself ready. I don't have a vault coach, so he basically lets me do things on my own at practice, as long as I'm being productive and not dieing. I've been vaulting for the past 3 weeks and feeling pretty comfortable on the runway and up in the air.

Any input would be appreciated.. thanks :star:

haha, my first meet is coming up this saturday too. I'm pretty excited as well, but we're not allowed to take the pole vaulting mats out yet, so I haven't vaulted since August. So for the past 3 weeks I've been doing workouts and I've been practicing my runs/plants on slide boxes.

However, I sprained my fourth finger last Friday, but hopefully it's be okay by Saturday.

I'm probably gonna focus on stretching alot this coming week so I'm not sore when Saturday comes about.

Also watch this pole vaulting video the night before the meet to get pumped up haha.

i would suggest start drinking a few glasses of water a day if you dont already, vault tuesday thursday first from a short run with a bar you know you can clear. Then go to a long run and also use a bar you know you can clear. That way when you get in the meet you wont be thinking "oh my gosh i havent jumped a bar in forever!" Other than that, just treat the meet like a practice. Stretch and warm up the same way you do before a practice, but only take 2 or 3 of your "practice" jumps. then relax, and "do yo thang!" haha good luck!
The greater the challenge, the more glorious the triumph

my advice to you is to treat this meet as a practice. Get there early and start very very low. Don't focus on jumping any particular height, just go out there and get as many quality jumps as you can.

Yeah I was thinkin the same thing too :D .

I wanted to first do some pop ups. Then I was gonna hold at 11' 6" and slowly move up my grip as I did more practice jumps. Then maybe some more as I cleared the beginning heights.
Thanks for the advice man!

Oh by the way, my finger is feeling like 10 times better so it looks like I'll be good for Saturday!

haha yeah it's a great video

lol today I got my uniform to compete on Saturday. And the pants and ridiculously tiny. My boxers stick out haha

I'm either just going to wear my own pair of shorts or I'm gonna get some short under armor.

I didn't wanna start another thread.

We can't take the mats out for jumping at all this week, and I have a meet coming this Saturday. I have not a clue what I should do right now.

Last week I did work with my plantbox and some pole runs, that was about it. There are rafters in our equipment shed where I could do a few things. And i have some pieces of PVC to work with.

I just don't know what I should do this week to prep correctly and be ready. Thanks again.
