eating before you jump
Depending on the time of my meet is how much or little i eat. Normally though i have a banana or some peanut butter with crakers or pretzels.. if i have about two or three hours, i will eat a bigger breakfast with like eggs and some type of meat. Thats just me though.
Its not just about working hard.. its about thinking hard too.

eat b4 jumping
This is by far one of the most important things out there. Nothing worse than being full b4 jumping, or not being satisfied! You should have eaten enough the 2-3 days before the competition anyway...enough good foods. Stick with clean foods, not processed. Balanced meal...Chicken/fish, with small amount of rice/potatoes, and small amout of veggies...throw in some fruit as well, or another small dessert of some kind. This will help a lot! Snack on a powerbar, energy bar of some kind during competition. Also sip on gatorade and water. Do not gulp down a bunch of gatorade! This will overload the system...instead, sip on gatorade and water everyday!

I have been reading a few books on diets for athletes, and all of them say that eating very healthy for 3 or 4 days before competition is crucial. Also to make sure you always drink water, and they say that Gatorade is good as well...but water is best. I agree with tmack, that this is probably just as crucial to vaulting your best as actually vaulting. If you don't have a balanced diet, then you can't be physically ready to compete.

For me, eating is part of my routine, just like doing the same warmup every time I compete. I like to eat about 3 hours before I compete but bring along snacks if I start to get hungry. I usually eat a big meal the night before competition and something like a peanut butter sandwich and fruit the day of. I just think there are so many factors in the pole vault that you don't want to have to think about feeling full or hungry or having a stomachache. Since sometimes meets last so long (I was vaulting for 6 hours at Midwest Regionals 2 years ago
), it helps to bring power bars or something just to take bites out of.

Pasta, bread, pancakes all carbs w/o anything else will always put me into a food coma.
