Pole vaulter Kym Howe has overcome a shoulder injury that threatened to keep her out of the Games.

Howe, who jumped an Australian record of 4.61m in Canberra on Australia Day, damaged her shoulder in the gym a few days later.

But she was back on the runway yesterday in Melbourne, easily clearing 4m to progress to tonight's pole vault final.

"The shoulder felt really good. The muscles are still a bit sore but the joint is fixed so I am sure it is going to be fine," said Howe, who will be gold medal favourite at the Commonwealth Games.
