Re: USATF Men - Live updates here
The results are slow to update, but I heard them say that Jeremy Scott missed his final attempt, and Miles was going to jump at 5.75.

This is a berth at the world championship we are talking about here...say what you will about vaulter's missing or underperforming, but the fact remains that if you don't clear it, height of the bar is an issue.
A third attempt clearance at 5.54 would have put him in 5th place, and with a B standard athlete ahead of him, he would not have made the team with a clearance at that height.
I'm not saying he should have passed, just saying that was the rationale.

They showed Derek's second attempt at 5.75, a bail.

Miles takes his third attempt at 5.76 and misses.
Congratulations to all of the vaulters today, especially Nick Mossberg who far exceeded everyone's expectations!

Everyone has an off day. I think brad is a smart jumper and it is disappointing that he didnt make it, but I still expect bigger jumps from brad in the future. I think a new American record is possible.

Derek Miles, First Place, Women’s Pole Vault (Senior)
On winning the competition:
“It was a great day, you don’t get these days very often. I didn’t jump as well as I would have liked. I would have liked a little bit of a higher bar. I’m a little bit behind in my training so in two or three weeks I’ll be a little bit stronger, a little bit more refined and that will be more exciting.”
On the performance:
“Last year I jumped 18 feet, 18-8 and an 18-10. I feel like I’m capable of jumping 19 feet again. It’s just going to come a little bit later in the summer.”
On his longevity in the sport:
“That’s my ultimate goal is to make sure I stay competitive. Be in at least the top 8 in the world and when I can’t do it anymore that’s kind of my sign.”
