Lake Stevens nips Snohomish

Herald staff

STANWOOD - The Lake Stevens girls track team beat Snohomish by two points to hand the previously undefeated Panthers their first loss of the season in a Wesco North tri-meet Wednesday at Stanwood High School.

Lake Stevens had 67 points to Snohomish's 65 and Stanwood's 57 to win the meet four days before the Viking Classic in Lake Stevens and the 19th Annual Larry Eason Invitational on Saturday in Snohomish.

"Lake Stevens has a great team and they had some great individual performances," Snohomish coach Tuck Gionet said. "Lake Stevens had a great meet."

Defending state javelin champion Brittany Aanstad's throw was more than 22 feet farther than the second-place finisher. Aanstad finished second in the pole vault and long jump and third in the high jump, scoring 13 points to lead Lake Stevens to the victory.

"She is an impressive athlete," Gionet said. "She has had some great coaching and she has turned into a gold mine (for Lake Stevens)."

Snohomish's Kara Sporrong, who has committed to the University of Georgia, won the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs to lead the Panthers. Jessica Yates, one of the top-rated triple jumpers in the state, won the event with a 36-foot, 6-inch jump, three feet better than her closest competition.

"We did bring our full team but we are a little dinged here and there," Gionet said. "We held some of our kids back (in getting ready for Eason).

"Our kids always look forward to meeting Lake Stevens as they have a very good team that has been established with great coaching," Gionet said.

Rachele Kloke (long jump) and Monique Thees (800) each won an individual event and combined to help lead the Spartans to victory in the 1,600 relay.

Snohomish competes again on Saturday against 1,183 athletes representing 63 teams with some teams coming from Canada and a team from Western Australia. Lake Stevens will host the Viking Classic at Lake Stevens High School.

Bears girls track still perfect in league

The Olympia Bears, the defending Class 4A girls track state champions, improved to 8-0 in the Narrows League. The Bears scored 93.5 points to win a three-way meet with Gig Harbor (92.5) and Stadium (3).

Olympia won on the last event, the 1,600 relay, to beat Gig Harbor by a point.

"They are very good," Olympia coach Cris Violette said. "They're going to be up there at the state meet."

Olympia will travel to Snohomish for the Eason Invitational on Saturday. The Bears won that top-notch meet last year.

"I think we have a ways to go," Violette said. "I think we as a coaching staff feel pretty good where we're at. Both the girls and the guys are a great bunch of kids."

The boys also won their three-way meet.

"I was impressed with the way our kids competed," Olympia boys track coach Scott Ditter said. "Gig Harbor is traditionally a strong program, but our kids did a good job too. It was a good time of the year to see that coming out. It's good to have that competition this late."

Casey Stevick won three events for the Bears.
