CLAYTON | Every time Phil Scott watches his son, Jason, charge down the runway and reach for the sky in the pole vault, he counts his blessings.

"I am lucky to be alive, and every day I spend with Jason means so much to me," said Phil Scott, the former head track and field coach at Dayton Christian High School who survived a heart attack three years ago and underwent four-way bypass surgery just a year ago.
"I just thank God every day for being alive and watching Jason grow and for still being here to see his great progress as a vaulter," said the proud father, who lives in Clayton with his wife, Debbie.
A daughter, Angela Franz, lives in Huber Heights.
Scott left his coaching post, where he coached track for eight years and cross country for five, at DC in 2003, the year he suffered the heart attack.
He has been helping coach Jason as an assistant on the award-winning Cedarville College track coaching staff.
Jason Scott, a state Division II pole vaulting champ at DC and this year's NAIA indoor king with a leap of 17 feet and ¾ inch at Johnson, Tenn., is a sports science major going into his senior year. He's been a record-setting vaulter for the Yellow Jackets.
Scott was one of 11 vaulters to compete in the prestigious North America Pole Vault Association national championships last week in Fresno, Calif., where he finished seventh. A career-best clearance of 17-3 came earlier this year in a Fort Wayne, Ind., meet.
"His goal is 18 feet and if he continues to improve ... well, the state college record is 18-2½," his father said.
But there's a tender touch of irony that makes you wonder if the son should be coaching the father â€â€
