Tx Relays Results
The results on the Texas website are wrong. Below are the real final results. Buller looked good clearing 5.60 easily. Flagged out at the bar at 5.70 on every jump. Eshbach looks ready to contend for 19 feet. All 3 of his clearances would have been excellent attempts at 18'8"+. Ran through once and bailed twice at 18'8". The only thing, as usual, keeping Eshbach from jumping really high is his brain. Harvey smoked 18' by a foot on a flaming ESSX carbon. Ran out of gas a bit at 18'4". Jim Davis looked a bit inconsistent at takeoff, but definitely can jump 18'8" and maybe higher this year. Kim made 18' easily enough but got crammed at 18'4 and went mental. Nearly made his 2nd but the standards were too deep. Hanna looks fit for 18'4" or so right now. His last 3 steps were bad...looked tired. Skipper was a bit mental at the beginning. Only took off once in warmup. I heard him tell his coach that he was exhausted from the heat and that was when the bar was only at 17'4". He'd better come to Austin a week early for NCAAs to aclimate. It'll be 20 degrees warmer and really humid in June. Most looked good. Jumped from 8 lefts for the first time this year. Flagged out at 18' and still put 8" on it to no avail.
The rest:
Glenn got a good call at 16'10". He hit the bar a bit on the back side and it didn't fall until the he was in the pit. It definitely was a miss, but the official kind of hesitated to call it. I yelled "Give it to him!" and the official threw up the white flag. The Akron coach got pissed at that, but as an official I think you should err on the side of the athlete. The sport is about them and a clearance at 5.15 ain't gonna make a difference in the grand scheme of things. Glenn did have a good attempt at 5.30 on his 3rd. Russell is really good on the runway, he seemed a bit mental yesterday though. When he was on though, he definitely looked like a mid-18' vaulter. Ryland looked really, really good on the runway but tookoff way under at 11' each time and never had a shot at his opener. Hunter took off way under 3 times and landed on the standard pad once.

He doesn't warmup either. He didn't take a run through until his opening bar. At least he didn't open at or above his PR, which he's done in the past.

yeah, he gave our coach fits here. His first ever 18 foot vault he opened at it. the problem is it worked for him on a couple occasions. You would think hed learn after all his best meets hes opened low.
18'8 at penn - came in 17'4
18'8 at ncaa's - came in at 17'10
18'6 at penn - came in 17'4
seems to be a trend. hmmm. and hes a chemical engineer. youd think hed use that brain

Well, I must say, about the bar falling, i was by far as surprised as anyone else that they were going to give it to me. I think it was a combination of things, because, for those of you who didnt get to see, i broke what was at the time,my biggest pole i had ever jumped on. (very new feeling by the way). Well, i had broken it at my second attempt at 515, and didnt have any other option but to go up a pole and take it....Taped my next pole, jumped, had enough hip height, just knicked it with my rib on the back side....got down, thought i was done, and then i get told they counted it as a make so, i wasnt going to argue....and like ashcraft said, 515 isnt going to effect anything anyway.....anyway, my original point, i think the official might have kind felt sorry for some reason or other....but either way, texas relays is an amazing meet, and it was some of the most fun i've had jumping in a long while
Champions aren't made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them-a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have last-minute stamina, they have to be a little faster, they have to have the skill and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill. - Muhammad Ali

Tye did look sharp. Great, great takeoff. It was a short approach...12 sounds about right. You could really see his "eliteness" compared to the the rest of the field. You wanna jump 19'4"+, take off like Tye. That's the difference.
The closest anyone approached to having as good a takeoff was Skipper. He is one strong youngster. He was taking off under, but he somehow was able to slam his hands forward and open up the pole anyway. It'll be scary to watch when he actually takes off where he's suppose to.
