Agreed - coaching others was a HUGE help to my jumping. It forced me to see things more objectively and I could then apply concepts I was trying to teach to my own vault. I've seen it happen with other athletes I've brought on as assistant coaches too. They've had improvement from 6" to a foot after having coached for less than a year.

After coaching for a year, I PR'd 9". I kept catching myself saying something to one of the kids and then thinking..."hey, I need to do that!"

training environment helped a lot. Being around guys who wanted to jump high and trying to prove yourself was key. When I arrived as a freshman in college there were already two 18' jumpers there! I wanted to be the next:)
holy crap, 16'6 in high school, thats crazy, how the heck did you do that? :D did you jump all 4 years? are you in a D1 school? :D my PR was 9'6 in 11th grade, 12' in 12th, and i used a pole 5lbs under my weight over the summer and got 13' at an all-comers meet. my school is below Division 3 and its in the NJCAA! haha, im excited, i cant wait :).

I started jumping in middle school going 10'6" as an 8th grader. I had very good pole vault coaches at the high school level (Rick Rogers, Brian Kimball and Gary Hunter) that all jumped at the college level in the late 1970's and early 80's. We worked on the basics of having a high plant, solid take off, and we worked the hell out of the swing!

At Illinois I had great training partners (Dean Starkey, Lane Lohr, Steve Bridges..) and a good learning environment. At both levels the training was fun, competitive, and we were always teaching and learning something about the vault. You've got to be hungry for knowledge and be able to accept different ways of doing things to be successful in this sport. Build on your strengths and improve on your weakness. I was slow down the runway but had a sweet plant, take off and swing!
With a 2 1/2 foot push off I only wish I could have held higher!
I would much rather work with 100% heart and 75% talent than 100% talent and 75% heart!

thats cool, i didnt even know pole vaulting was a high school sport untill like 11th grade. i always saw it on the olympics and liked it, but never even thought about it being in high school. a wrestling friend of mine did it 9-12 grade, and i didnt even know he vaulted untill 11th grade. i wish that ash-hole woulda told me about it earlier.
