To answer my own question:

Jon Hendershot wrote:Talked with Tom Eitel, jumps coach at Montana State. He said after Rudy,
Moser and Sultanova missed all 3 attempts at 4.40 (Sultanova had an earlier
miss so ended up 3rd), R & M were tied and then took 4th try at 4.40 (x).

Then bar went down 5cm, per new NCAA rule this year. Both missed at 4.35
and 4.30. Moser missed 4.25, which Rudy cleared for the win.

Great info. Thanks Becca! What's really disturbing me is where achtungpv got that picture of my sister to use on his avatar! ;)

Rudy and Moser both look to clear higher bars. Except for one run through for Roudy, that was a great jump off. Both of them will hit 4.45 soon.
compete and jump safe, have fun

MSU's Rudy is tops at nationals

March 12, 2007 -- by Bill Lamberty, MSU Sports Information Director

MSU's Ellie Rudy won the women's vault title at the NCAA 2007 indoor track and field championships in Fayetteville, Ark., with a vault of 14'1." MSU Athletics photo by Dean Hendrickson.
Ellie Rudy knew her mission was simple.

"Just get over the bar," Rudy said with a laugh after winning the 2007 NCAA Indoor Pole Vault National Championship on Saturday. "That's pole vaulting boiled down, just get over the bar."

Rudy got over bars in record-setting fashion on Saturday at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. The sophomore from Woodland Park, Colo., cleared a Big Sky record 14-1.5 on five vaults without a miss. Trouble was, so did Florida's Natalie Moser.

"I wasn't sure, but I thought we were tied," Rudy said. "Tom (Eitel, MSU's vaults coach) told me right away I was tied, so I never got out of it mentally. That was important."

Still, Rudy said, it was a challenge. "It was like running a 200 (meter race) and being done, but then having someone tell you you're not done, you have to get up and run 300 more. The second I was done my body was exhausted, but I had to keep going."

Rudy said confidence and experience carried the day. "I never got nervous, which was sweet," she said. "I've been here before. I felt good today. I didn't feel spectacular, but I felt good. I knew I was going to make (14-1), and when you know you're going to do something you do it."

Eitel detected Rudy's fatigue, but said a tactical decision played a key role.

"I knew Ellie was out of gas, but I knew (Moser) was even more tired," he said. "We kept Ellie on a medium pole to save energy. The other girl was on a stiff pole for height, but Ellie really stayed consistent."

Saturday's historical nature wasn't lost on Bobcat head coach Dale Kennedy.

"This is tremendously exciting, and shows that if you're a talented kid and you're willing to work hard you can reach this level at a school like Montana State. This is quite a moment."

FAYETTEVILLE -- Stephanie Irwin, who took up pole vaulting in the ninth grade at Mt. Ida., bubbled with excitement with her sixth-place finish for Arkansas in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday -- good for All-America honors.

"The crowd was awesome," Irwin said. "I was not nervous until I started warming up and then I said, 'Oh, my gosh, this is really nationals.' It was my first time."

Irwin, a sophomore, was both a sprinter and distance runner for Mt. Ida until her dad, an assistant coach there, stuck her in the pole vault one day for extra team points. She's been a happy vaulter ever since.

Both Irwin and senior teammate Jodi Unger cleared 13 feet, 5 1/4 inches to make All-America on Saturday, but Unger was disappointed to finish ninth on more misses for the Lady Razorbacks, who tied for 21st place overall with nine points.

Fighting back tears, Unger said, "I wanted to finish on a stronger note in my last Indoor at Arkansas. You want to go out with a bang. I had some pole issues, but I just missed clearing 13-9 1/4."

Harter added, "Outdoors should be better for all of us. But we still had seven All-Americans. Jodi has come so far in the pole vault. She's been a torch-bearer for us; everyone cheers for her."

Rudy Ready

MSU Bobcats Track and Field News : 2007-03-09 : Bozeman, MT
By MSU Sports Information
MSU's Ellie Rudy is ready for the 2007 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, where she jumps Saturday at 4 pm MST

The best news for Montana State's sophomore pole vaulter Ellie Rudy entering this weekend's NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships is that she won't see anything she hasn't seen before.

Rudy enters the meet -- she jumps at the University of Arkansas' indoor facility at 4 pm MST on Saturday -- as the third-ranked vaulter in the nation, which gives the Woodland Park, Colo., native a feeling of confidence. "The leader is only at about 14-1, which is only an inch above me," Rudy said. "So I know I'm right there.

She said most of her preparation leading to Saturday's women's pole vault championship has been mental. "It's been more preparing mentally," she said, "because I feel like I can win. I feel like I can jump the heights it will take to win. Last year I just wanted to try to finish higher than my ranking."

Rudy said the experience garnered in finishing 11th at last year's NCAA Indoor Championships applies to this year's quest for a national championship. "I think it's really important," she said. "The track is the same size but the building is so much smaller than ours and it gets really loud in there. When the fans start yelling, it gets really loud. (This year) I know to move a step back because I'll be so pumped up."

Rudy is looking to become MSU's first indoor All-America since Shannon Agee Jones in 2002.
