E-town's Clark is pole vault champion

LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa - Kevin Clark became Elizabethtown College's first-ever national champion in track and field Saturday, claiming the NCAA Division III pole vault title at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind.

A junior, Clark cleared a height of 17-1 and 1/2 on his third and final attempt to garner the gold medal.

Clark was able to clear the bar on his final attempt at two previous heights as well, including the opening height of 16-1 and 3/4.

After clearing the opening height, Clark again made the most of his third opportunity to clear his next height, 16-5 and 1/2. That clearance guaranteed Clark a medal as only Matt Novak of Wisconsin-LaCrosse and Kyle Calvert of Loras College joined Clark in clearing that height.

Both Clark and Novak cleared 16-9 and 1/2 on their second attempts, but Novak then failed to clear the would-be winning height. Had Clark failed to clear the winning height on his final attempt, he would have claimed the silver medal, losing out to Novak on misses.
