Skipper might miss NCAA meet

Two-time NCAA indoor pole vault champion Tommy Skipper of Oregon is listed as "very doubtful" with a strained calf muscle in his left leg heading into the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships this week.
Skipper, the UO record-holder at 19 feet, captured NCAA indoor crowns the past two years at 18-8 1/4 and 18-4 1/2 , respectively. The Duck senior placed second as a freshman in 2004 at 18-4 1/2 .
Skipper suffered the injury during his normal warm-up routine on the day before the U.S. Indoor Track & Field Championships in Boston on Feb. 23. UO assistant coach Dan Steele said Skipper "felt something behind his knee," and after further evaluation, it was determined he had a mild calf strain.

"It's not a serious injury, but the timing is unfortunate," Steele said. "He wants to compete in his last NCAA indoor championships, but at the same time, we have to make the right decision to protect him. We won't make a final decision for another day, but at this point, I would say he is very doubtful."
Skipper, who ranked third among pole vault qualifiers at 18-1, is one of three UO athletes to earn automatic berths into the NCAA indoor meet to be held at the University of Arkansas on Friday and Saturday.
