This is for anyone who can give me any info on what is needed to walk on.
A former vaulter of mine, a 15'3 pr, wants to start vaulting again. He wants to walk on, but the vault coach told him it was too late because of some type of paperwork. Does anyone know what this paperwork is, and is there a deadline for this, or is this just something to get rid of this kid?
This young man has a lot of potential and only jumped fr and senior year. Missed soph and jr seasons because of injuries. Why would someone not want a vaulter like this?

There is a lot of paperwork that goes into it. Physicals, NCAA Clearinghouse, etc.
It depends a lot on what college he went to. A kid who is not turning out until this late in the year is probably perceived as not being very serious about it, plus he has missed all of fall training (out of shape/greater risk of injury) and missed all of the time they spent doing drills.

Ok, He has been working out and talked to the coach before the 1st semester ended and coach seemed glad to get him and told him to come back when he retured to school, that is when he told him that it was too late because of the paperwork.

It also can come down to not having room to add more men to your roster. I have run into problems with not having room to add men to our roster because of Title IX restrictions placed on our program. Other then that there will be instiutional paperwork, but I guarentee that it can be done. I know that what we will do is have them fill out a try-out waiver form that gives them a week to prove themself before having to actually have a physical. You may have this vaulter ask if he can do this and prove to the coaching staff that he will be an asset to the program. Sounds like the coach is jus being lazy...send him my way I'll take him!

has anyone thought that the coach may have heard something negative about the 15'3" jumper like (he's hard to work with, trouble with grades, partying, lazy, or talks back) and the paper work stuff is just an excuse to not to have to deal with him? my coach would rather work with a kid that is dedicated but may not jump as high as another.... just a thought

Good point...a valid reason not to take a kid, but it seems like SinCity has a lot of respect for this kid. You always wonder as a coach who could have been great that is right in front of you but didn't come out for whatever reason...you just hope you are not responsible for not giving that kid the chance. Not just when it comes to actual jumping either...the vault has taught me so much about life and I don't know where I would be without it as I am sure many other vaulters can attest to. I do not want to take that away from somebody else. It would be especially hard on the junior high and high school level for me to turn kids away...my coach took a chance on me and it has shaped my life ever since. anyway this is not really the question at hand, but just got me thinking.

Thanks for all the info. And jsut for the record, this young man is a very good person. He's no more irresponsible than any other 18 yr old and is a very hard worker. After so much potential and going thru 2 yrs of knee surgery and rehab jsut to vault his senior year I just think he got burnt out and needed a rest. Now he is ready for some vaulting and hopefully he didn't miss his window, by not going where they wanted him.

It sounds like the vault coach wants him, but the head coach either does not or school policies (title IX issues or whatever) prevent them from adding him at this point.
I would encourage your former vaulter to sit down with the head coach and find out what the issues are. If they can't work them out, at least he can let the head coach know he wants to be on the team next year.
