You never know where life will take you or what will happen once you get there.

That’s been the experience of 2002 Spring Creek High graduate Lauri Smith.

From Logan, Utah, to Laramie, Wyoming, to Australia, Smith has made it her mission to seize opportunities when they arise.

The results have been impressive.

Smith, who starred in soccer and track for the Spartans, recently finished 10th in the pole vault at the Mountain West Conference Championships.

Her journey to that accomplishment is an interesting one.

Smith grew up in Spring Creek and earned all-state honors in soccer. She also spent four years on the Lady Spartan track team where she won two state pole vault titles and placed at state in the 300-meter hurdles. She was also part of the 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams and helped Spring Creek to three state titles (2000-2002).

After graduation, she enrolled at Utah State where she planned to major in engineering. But after one year in Logan, Smith’s competitive fires sent her to Laramie where she joined the University of Wyoming track and field program.

As for her thoughts on the desolate setting that houses the Cowboys campus, Smith said, “Once you get past the wind, it’s OK.â€Â
