Need 13' 130 for HS Girl Protoge

Unread postby PVCoachNJ » Sat Apr 14, 2012 12:53 am

Hi there,

I was a 5-year volunteer coach at my former high school for vaulters and am in my rookie season on the payroll. I am 100% dedicated to my kids, but don't always have the tools at my disposal to reach their potential. I have a girl whose PR is 9'6", but her potential is through the roof. She crushes the 12' 120lb UCS that she uses now. She is about 120 pounds, very fast and powerful. I want her on a 13' 130lb pole, but am having trouble finding a good used one. The school does not have the one she needs. Can anyone help me find a pole like this at a discount (less than 200)?

My kids mean the world to me and I want to give them the best chance to succeed.

Thank you,
Coach Dan

Wow a 13'130 is going to feel about 30 pounds heavier than the 12'120 she is on now. Check out this chart to learn more about the relative stiffness of poles: http://www.skyjumpers.com/articles/pvpr ... table.html

She would be better off with a 12'130 or 140 or a 13'120.

Also, it will help if you post where you are located. It costs about $100 or so to ship a pole.

Oh wow I see what you mean. I guess it's also tough to gauge what pole they are ready for when every vaulter is different. From the chart you showed me, it looks like maybe a 13' 120 or 12'6 125 is the better way to go. I really appreciate your help Rainbowgirl28. I would like the pole to be just over her current weight of 120 if I can, just to be safe within the HS rules.

Is that chart based on holding from maximum grip? By that I mean, is the resistance of a max(below label) grip of a 12' 150, the same as a 13' 130?(This is how I understood it) Or does it mean the resistance is the same holding at 12' on the 13' pole?

I'm located in New Jersey by the way, and would really appreciate any and all help.

Thanks again,
Coach Dan

The relative resistance is if you were holding 12' (or whatever height) on both poles.

The other thing you need to keep in mind is that 12' poles can be a little tricky...

12' Spirits tend to run a little stiffer than new poles from other brands. A 12'120 Spirit is probably going to feel about like a 12'130 Mystic, for example. Send me a message if you find a pole and I can give you some feedback on it. Your best bet is probably just to see what you can borrow.
