Vaulters soar
La Jolla's Jeff Coover and Granite Hills' Scott Finley cleared 16 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault at the Golden West Invitational on Sunday at Folsom High.
Coover and Finley also finished second and third, respectively, at the state championships in Sacramento a week earlier.
Coover, who is bound for Indiana University in the fall and who had soared over 16-4 twice, finished second in the Golden West competition based on fewer misses behind Granite Bay junior Scott Roth's winning vault of 16-10.
Finley, whose previous best was 16-2, was third.
Coover and Finley are tied for second on the all-time San Diego Section list behind El Camino's Derek Scott, who set the section record of 16-8 at the Sundevil Invitational.
Scott, who will attend USC, suffered a season-ending knee injury in April.
