BOWLES VAULTS TO S.F.A

Madeline Bowles' two-year mastery over the pole vault cleared the way to a college career for the T.K. Gorman standout.

Bowles, opting to stay in the Pineywoods, signed a track and field scholarship with Stephen F. Austin Wednesday afternoon before family, friends and schoolmates in the T.K. Gorman cafeteria.

"I love track here at Gorman," said Bowles, "But I'm very excited and looking forward to being in college."

In just two years of pole vaulting, Bowles already owns a pair of TAPPS state titles. Bowles, unbeaten in 10 meets last year, briefly held the girls' state record in the pole vault after she achieved a mark of 12-0 in Malakoff. Bowles won state with a height of 11-0 in Waco.

While Bowles' results speak volumes, her work ethic in a sport just recently made a UIL-sponsored event says even more.

"It's not like going out there and running," said Bowles, named to the All-East Texas Track and Field first team last year. "When I first started in the seventh grade, I got frustrated and didn't think I would get very far. I kept doing it and got through the first learning curve. I figured if I could keep up the good work and keep working hard, I could do it in college."

In addition to competing in the pole vault, Bowles also long jumps, triple jumps and runs in the 800- and 1600-meter relays for Gorman. That versatility helped the Lady Crusaders win their fifth consecutive state championship.

Bowles, a straight-A student ranked No. 11 in her senior class, picked SFA over big-time programs such as Oklahoma, due in part to inviting surroundings. Stephen F. Austin, coached by Phil Olson, won the Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the spring.

"They made me feel like I would fit in there," Bowles said. "And I like the team and I'm close to home."

Before moving on to the Nacogdoches school, Bowles first wants to stamp her name in the record books and help her team to a sixth straight track and field crown.

"My goal this year is to win state," said Bowles, who hopes to someday compete in the Olympics. "And I want to be the first girl in Texas to go 13-0."

Tempe Corona del Sol pole vaulter Katie Morgan signed a letter of intent with California.

She also had considered Stanford, Georgia and Arizona.

Morgan, who has vaulted a 5A-record 12 feet, 10 inches, partly chose Cal to join freshman sensation Kira Costa, who jumped 13-8 1/2 last summer at the Golden West meet in Sacramento.

"They know each other well," Corona del Sol pole vault coach Jeff Guy said. "She thought that would work out great, working out together."

Men's Track and Field: Owls Ink Whitham for 2004-05 Season

HOUSTON – Tyler Whitham has signed a national letter of intent to continue his education and track and field career at Rice University, men’s track and field head coach Jon Warren announced today.

Whitham attends Cinco Ranch High School in Katy and is a hurdler and pole vaulter for the Cougars. Whitham is the reigning district 19-5A champion in both the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles. He finished second in the pole vault at the district meet last season.

all you high school juniors and seniors. just remember if you want to vault in college you dont have to go to a big division 1 school. lots of d3 schools have excellent track and field programs and division 3 has produced some really good vaulters. keep your options open. there are some advantages of going to a smaller school. of course for some people a big school is a good fit.
