Women’s Track and Field adds five during early signing period

Track and Field News High School All-American Alandra Sherman headlines Longhorns’ early class.
AUSTIN, Texas – The University of Texas women’s track and field program has signed five outstanding prep athletes during the early fall signing period, head coach Beverly Kearney announced today. The Longhorns’ class is comprised of one hurdler, two pole vaulters and a pair of distance runners.

Headlining the group is Alandra Sherman (Houston, Texas) , a Track and Field News All-American hurdler, and Temeka Kincy (Indianapolis, Ind.) , the Indiana state record holder in the 800. The Longhorns also signed Ashley Laughlin (Marble Falls, Texas) and Anne Phillips (Ft. Worth, Texas) , both standouts in the pole vault in the state of Texas, and Callie Wells (The Woodlands, Texas) , a top notch distance runner in Texas, as well.

Laughlin, a senior at Marble Falls High School, is an outstanding all-around athlete who is just beginning to realize her true potential in the pole vault. At the Texas 4A State Championships in May, she won the pole vault with a mark of 12-6 to set new conference 4A and state records in the event. She finished as the 4A state runner-up in the pole vault in 2002. Laughlin’s vault of 12-6 at the 2003 state championships ties her for the fifth-best returning mark in the nation in the pole vault according to dyestat.com.

Phillips, a senior at Trinity Valley School, has a top prep mark of 12-3 in the pole vault, which ties her for the eighth-best returning vault in the country according to dyestat.com. At the Southwest Preparatory Conference Championships in May, Phillips won the the pole vault and established a new SPC state record with her mark of 11-6. She also placed 10th in the pole vault in section A at the Texas Relays at Mike A. Myers Stadium in April.
