Custom ranks are typically reserved for moderators and administrators. They are given custom ranks to declare their position on the board. Also, some other custom ranks are given to some people, but that is unfair to the rest of the posters.

On one of the forums I visit we have an "Official Board Troublemaker" which derived from a hilarious conversation we all had on AIM before. It just sort of stuck for him. But there's only like 10 of us regular visitors on that forum...heh
