Catching up to the pole uncoling

Unread postby VaultMarq26 » Sun Feb 16, 2014 2:47 pm

I just need some reassurance on what I am thinking.

I have a vaulter who feels like (and looks like) he is not in the correct position to drive his hips up during the top of the vault. He states that the pole "uncoils really fast". In watching video of him, I can see that the pole is at neutral and uncoiled before he has finished driving his hips up (i.e. he has not come out of his rock back position). He is pretty much wasting a good amount of energy that he put into the pole.

I do feel that he is whipping his trail leg through at a very good speed. My though is that he is either pulling on the pole (which I really am not seeing), or he has stopped moving the pole with the top hand which in turn cause the pole to start unbending too soon.

Any thoughts about my thought process.

Thanks for any feedback.

Vids would help.

Jumping at 14' 10". 4.52 I believe

Holding a 15' 180 pole

Athlete weighs in the upper 160's I believe.

He's doing a lot of things well! Nice job.

I think he could handle more grip as he is moving the pole well. That would slow things down a bit for him.

We have a really nice progression of poles that will allow that to happen.

In fact, at the next height I wanted him to move up to the 15 185 and grip up since his standards were so deep..now I was coaching through texts at this meet, and he went to a 15' 6" 180 because he didn't bring the 15' pole.

With the same grip and 6 extra inches on the pole, he felt the pole uncoiling even faster.

Big East Conference this weekend, we'll see if he can put it together

Thanks for the response

I would move grip before pole based on that one video. Have him grip up on that same pole and see what happens. It may become too soft or it may slow down a bit more for him and work better.
