Expo Explosion VI in TX: Barber makes 5.87!

Unread postby SteveU » Sat Jan 03, 2015 9:36 pm

As I posted in the Texas forum, I can't believe I (a general track person) am posting this before all of this site's passionate fans, but word "on the street" (Stuart Kantor tweet) is that Shawn Barber went 19-3 today at Expo Explosion IV. Assuming Barber's still at Arkon and the competition met record standards, that's a new collegiate record! WOW

Awaiting official results ...

Oh, also for HS boys, Bray and Benavides both went 17-3 (and missed 17-11), but that's all I know.

AND a new Canadian indoor record!

If true, this 5.87 beats his old Canadian record 5.75 set in Albuquerque Mar 15, 2014 by a full 0.16m (6.25 inches)!

But I don't think it's true. The results from http://www.texaselitepolevault.com/ are:

    PIT 2 Elite Open Men
    76 Sam Kendricks 19' 0.75
77 Shawnacy Barber 18' 10.25 (this only TIES his record set on Mar 15, 2014)
    78 Jack Whitt 18' 8.75
    79 Colton Ross 18' 8.75
    80 Logan Cunningham 18' 8.75
    81 Reece Watson 18' 1
    82 Cameron Meyer 18' 0.25
And from the same website, results for HS Boys are:

PIT 2 Elite High School Boys
    131 Brandon Bray 17' 8.5
    132 Paulo Benavides 17' 2.75
    133 Tommy Dial 17'2
    134 Jacob Wooten 17'
    135 Antonio Ruiz Ruiz 16' 8
    136 Riley Richards 16' 1
    137 Taylor Gill 16' 0.075
    138 Hagen Stoute 16'
    139 Mikel Carter 15' 6
    140 Greyson Gonzalez 15' 6
    141 Brant Smith 15' 3
Hendricks and Barber probably ATTEMPTED 19' 2.75.

Kantor, you're fired!

The TX PV site still hasn't posted the results, nor has Stuart.

Here is the image of the result as posted on the Texas Track & Field Coaches Association Twitter account.

Any one know if they measured in metric or imperial units? Or if 5.87m is a conversion from a measured height of 19' 3"?

I have confirmed that Barber's 5.87 jump was measured in metric, the rest were imperial.

Great vid! Thanks for posting!

From the slo-mo, it looked like he might have Volzed that jump (his left hand is very close to the bar as he passes over it), but since it was accepted as a valid clearance by the officials, I assume that he didn't.

I also notice that his technique has improved quite a bit in the past year, looking a lot more like RL now! Great elastic stretch to a C!

It's hard to criticize such a phenomenal PR, but I think he's got plenty of room for more technical improvements in the next few years. Remember that he's only 20 years old!

It looked to me like he bent the pole before he took off (under a bit), but from what I could see, there was no pressure by the bottom arm to pry the bend. Rather, he was clotheslined a bit.

I have watched this video multiple times now and I think it is clear that he steadies the bar with his hand. You can turn your blinders on if you want, but this should have been a miss.

Also the Canadians can let this mark stand if they want, but I know if this was IAAF or World Record it would be picked apart and wouldn't stand.

Finally why and how could this be an NCAA Record when he is not competing at a "Track & Field Meet" according to NCAA bylaws? and it doesn't appear like he is representing his college in this pv expo (Akron?). This is probably why you won't see this mark on directathletics or tfrrs.

It's quite possible that no records will even be applied for, even though the height was remeasured in metres. NCAA rules are more stringent than IAAF rules, but even with IAAF rules (which Canada complies with), I believe that PV records must be achieved in "official" meets, not in PV-Only meets. So this clearance will likely be listed with an asterisk.

Come to think of it, I didn't see any official waving a flag after the clearance, one way or the other, so without "proper" officiating, how can it possibly be an official record?

So Volz or not, this is unlikely to become an official NCAA or Canadian indoor record.

But it doesn't take away from how phenomenal this vault was! Great things are coming for Shawn, based on this early-season clearance!

He also cleared 19-0 for the first time in this meet, and that one may not have been as dubious as the 19-3. I'd like to see his 19-0 vault vid, if anyone can post it please. It may be that his hip height is even higher on the 19-0 than on the 19-3.
