i was just curious...on a scale of 1-10
how helpful are spikes? i know they help
you dig in to the runway and they are
light but i have nike running shoes that
are like literally 5 ounces each...and i'm
a naturally quick kid...should i invest for
next season?

i personally LOVE  spikes!! i have really narrow feet so i have trouble getting flats to fit me, but spikes fit me very well. i don't vault in anything else. i do think the help with speed down the runway, and they can be very useful if it is raining at an outdoor meet. otherwise you could slip while running or at take-off.

Im naturally quick, but im even quicker with spikes. I personally love them to death  (i make sure my spikes are nice and warm and are always not squished, because they don't like being crowded. i also keep the Chee in my shoes (good asian spirit) good by carrying my budha with them) but other then my quirky things, the real advantages are u get nice grip on take-off and get a little more speed.

i love my spikes...my running shoes are really heavy because i have extremely flat feet and so have to have shoes with extra arch support....i imagine if i could use lighter weight shoes i wouldn't notice so much of a difference except in the rain.

I've practiced in tennis shoes ever since I spiked myself in the shin but I compte in my spikes. I think they help a lot, especially if there's crappy weather.

Spikes are lightweight, more form-fitting than flats, and give you confidence with the added traction. I think they're more of a mental advantage than physical.

The disadvantage is that they have a lot less padding than flats, so open you up to more overuse injuries, such as achilles tendinitis, patellar tendinitis, ankle, knee, and hip problems, heel and arch problems, and shin splints. They supposedly put your feet in better position to sprint (debatable), but beat up on your body if you overuse them. Best advice I ever got from an elite coach was to jump in flats for 2/3 to 3/4 of your practice, then only put them on when you need an extra little boost. Also wear them in meets obviously, but jump in flats more and your body will thank you.

I like spikes. But if anything my coach says to wear them only when doing full run because it will pump you up mentally and say to yourself subliminally "ok, now its for real" its a real good confidence builder ;)
