Many seem to be confused about the rulings:
Page 53 of the 2010 NFHS Track and Field rules
7-5 ART.3
The competitors weight shall be at or below the manufacturer's pole rating. The Manufacturers must Include on each pole: the pole rating that shall be a minimum of 3/4 inch in a contrasting color located within or above the top handhold position; a 1inch circular band indicating the maximum top hand-hold position with the position being determined by the manufacturer. Prior to competition, the coach must verify that all of the school's pole vaulter and poles meet these requirements. What this means is the coach has to confirm that all the poles used in Competition comply with this rule, it is his or her responsibility, not the day of but prior to any competition you must have this 1 inch ring on the poles! Please do not wait till the last minute you should have this taken care of even in practice to insure the poles are marked correctly!Plan ahead it takes about a week to 10 days to get a weight label in the mail! You may contact the manufacturer to obtain a replacement ring. The replacement ring must match the engravings elsewhere on the pole and or the serial number included on the label! On ESSX, CATA-POLE, Maxima4, Maxima HS or FiberSport you must provide serial number and engraved weight of these brands or a label cannot be made! For replacement labels for these brands you may contact
Bruce@officialessx.com via email including your serial number and engraved weight and a label will be sent to you for only $10.00 to make that pole certified to be used under these rules
NOTES: Etchings, serial numbers, etc that appear on the poles shall not replace the requirement of the manufacturer's pole rating of the 3/4-inch marking in contrasting color on each pole.
Each State association shall determine its own procedure regarding coaches' verification. If you have a pole without a 1" ring at the top you need to contact the manufacturer today to obtain the proper band to be certified!
If you own a pole brand ESSX, CATAPOLE, Maxima4, or FiberSport and need a verification label, you may send us your credit card number or a check to Xlogicsports for $10.00 per pole along with a self address envelope and the required serial number and weights and flex if available.
Sorry we can only verify pole brands with serial numbers that Bruce Caldwell has produced over the years!
CATAPOLES prior to 1993 cannot be verified!
TRAINING POLES MAY NOT BE CONVERTED
For all other brands please contact the manufacturers!

Yeah, those are the ones I was talking about. Believe it or not I've got a kid that loves jumping on those old tree trunks. Still $10 a label. Right? Speaking of Cats. Did you ever see an orange cata-pole? It had a painted on label. The thing looks like an old Thermo flex, It is a Cata-pole though. I've never seen one like it before. Later......Mike

So, does this mean a perfectly fine pole from the 80's cannot be used in competition any longer just because the ring can't be replaced/added? Very few of our poles (I vaulted on these particular poles) had more than etchings for length and weight rating.
I find that this pretty much flies in the face of the rule that you can vault on any type of pole of any diameter, etc...
I'm confused.

My understanding is that Gill will certify Pacer III poles, but not without transporting them to Illinois and having them re-flexed. I hope that if I am wrong someone will rebuke me!

That is correct. If you have a pole you are unable to get a label for, it is not legal for HS competition.

This is false. The form available @ gillathletics.com is used for all ages of the Pacer brands of pole. There have been a few exeptions but even those did not require the pole be sent back.

Just got a replacement label. Gill responded very quickly to my request (less than a week).
