Building standard base pads

Has anyone built any standard base pads? I know they must have at least 2" of high density foam padding to be legal. I hate shelling out $500 to $1,000 and am considering trying to build my own set. Advice or suggestions? Any pics?

I've never built a set, but in looking at them they do not look difficult to construct. My suggestions - use at least 5/8" ext. grade plywood, use exterior glue and screws, lots of bracing (you know they will get abused), and cover with the 2' high density foam and a heavy duty cover. Best of luck.

I built a set about 8 years ago. They ended up costing me $200 but they were a custom fit for my standard bases which is nicer than a uinversal set of pads that shift around and you have reconfim the zero mark every time you move the standands.
I built a wooden base from 1x's and plywood that snugly stradled the standard base rails. I bought the foam local - 4" thick gray polyurethane.
The vinyl covers were stitched up by the local tent and awning company. The foam was glued to the plywood and then the covers were stretched over the foam and then stapled to the underside of the wooden base. I then painted on the 0-80 marks on the top face in the correct location.
