PVJess, If you're looking for something for a T shirt that would get lot's of stares and comments. Put on the front a vaulter silhouette and on the back the words "You're right! We're nuts". Later.....Mike

I received this one from my friend Wayne Dalton who coaches at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT.

Tribute to patriots of freedom

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings,
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long, delirious burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew.
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
Pilot Officer John Gillespie Magee, Jr. (September 1941)

How a pole vaulter reads it

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on grip taped poles,
Sunward I've vaulted, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - sprinted and planted and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring oer the bar,
I've chased the ever rising mark along, and flung
My eager body over endless bungied pits.
Up, up the long, ride of rebounding poles afar
I've topped the wind-swept bars with easy grace
Where never sprinter, or high jumper flew.
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of vaulting blue,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

My favorite saying has to be "You mushed the pole!"

I've always thought a vaulter could come up with their own version of the Snipers creed. Go ahead, give it a try.

My Rifle (The Creed of a United States Marine)

This is my rifle.
There are many like it, but this one is MINE.
My rifle is my best friend. It is my life.
I must master it as I must master my life.
My rifle without me is useless. Without my rifle, I am useless.
I must fire my rifle true.
I must shoot straighter than my enemy who is trying to kill me.
I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will...
My rifle and myself know that what counts in war is not the rounds we fire,
the noise of our bursts, nor the smoke we make.
We know it is the hits that count. We will hit...
My rifle is human, even as I, because it is my life.
Thus, I will learn it as a brother.
I will learn its weaknesses, its strengths, its parts, its accessories,
its sights, and its barrel.
I will ever guard it against the ravages of weather and damage.
I will keep my rifle clean and ready, even as I am clean and ready.
We will become part of each other. We will...
Before God I swear this creed.
My rifle and myself are the defenders of my country.
We are the masters of our enemy.
We are the saviors of my life.
So be it, until there is no enemy, but PEACE.

I've topped the wind-swept bars with easy grace
Where never sprinter, or high jumper flew.
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of vaulting blue,
Put out my hand, and held the crossbar on.

Here's my shot at re doing the Sniper's Creed into the vaulter's creed.

This is my vaulting pole.
There are many like it, but this one is MINE.
My pole is my best friend. Pole vaulting is my life.
I must master vaulting as I master my life.
My pole without me is useless. Without my pole, I am useless.
I must run fast, tall and strong.
I must vault higher than my competitor who is trying to take my medal.
I must clear the crossbar before he does. I will...
My pole and myself know that what counts in competition is not the crossbars we hit, the opening height, nor the records we break.
We know it is the effort that counts. We will succeed.
My pole is human, even as I, because it is my life.
Thus, I will learn it as a brother.
I will learn it prebend, its weight limit, its weak spot, its optimum grip,
its flex rating, our potential.
I will ever guard it against the ravages of a careless sprinter's spikes.
I will keep my pole clean and taped, just as my hands are clean and taped.
We will become part of each other. We will...
Before God I swear this creed.
We are the masters of our competition.
The pits are the saviours of my life.
So be it, until there are no more crossbars, but CLOUDS.
