Vitaly Petrov is perhaps the best known pole vault coach, and if you ask me, teaches the best model of how to preform a vault. However does anyone know if he actually has done any jumping himself??? i can't find any results on him...

don't you know man?? he must have jumped like 22', cause obviously you can only coach vaulting if you're a big vaulter. So obviously, if he coached a big jumper, he must have jumped real big himself!!

No, for real, I "heard" that he jumped 14' once. But I have never seen any results for myself, so I can't confirm this.

While I have always argued that, all things being equal, the better a vaulter you were the better the coach you would be, I take great comfort from a quote by Arrigo Saachi - who having been a less than average soccer player - took his team to two European Cup titles as a coach. When challenged about his lack of playing ability he said - "You dont have to have been a horse to become a jockey".
