Criteria for pole vaulting

Unread postby maureen23 » Tue Feb 22, 2011 9:49 pm

Track began yesterday at my school and I was very interested in trying out. But I don't want to embarrass myself so what is some criteria so I could see if I could be good at- or a least able to do- pole vaulting.

Go for it! Don't worry about optimum criteria or about being embarrassed. We just had our first practice last week. Most of the beginners could barely make it onto the mat - but they all had a ball and left smiling. Be careful - it can become addictive.

Well generally, the taller the better, the faster the better, the more able to learn new motor skills the better... but at the end of the season, the kids who are willing to work hard and stick with the event are the ones most rewarding to coach.

You should try it :)

Thanks for the replies! I'm trying out for pole vaulting tomarrow. I'm pretty tall and I am fast at sprinting but not long distance.

Should do fine. It's definitely a sprint not a marathon. Key thing is, pay attention, have fun and figure if something looks like it could hurt you (gripping too high, fooling around, letting go of the pole on an aborted jump) it will. This is a great event but make sure you are prepared to be patient with your progress................Later.................Mike
