Check out the newest SI issue (The pictures 50 years of SI photos), inside is a great shot from the box looking up at John Pennel clearing 17' its a great shot.
ahh San Diego: women, sun , beaches, pole vault, what else do you need.

The vault was progressing so fast at that point, that Pennel actually had a PR of 17'10 1/2" from just a few years after his barrier breaking 17-footer but he never held the WR again.

He broke that WR in Houston, I think at Rice??? Only WR record broke in TX??

Nope. Kjell Issaksson of Sweden jumped a WR 5.55 (18-02 1/2) in Austin in...73? 74?.

I think it was in El Paso in 1972. I think Seagren cleared it too that day. It might have been higher, too.
