18' on a 15' Pole

Unread postby baggettpv » Fri Dec 18, 2009 1:03 am

Hey all. Bill Jones and I were trying to figure out the guys that have jumed 18' on a 15' pole. Don BAird came to mind but that's it. Any other guys over 18' on a 15' pole?

McKane Lee was SO close a few summers ago, he just barely nicked it off. He did go high 17's on a 15' pole.

Both Joe Dial and Greg Duplantis did it. I think Jeff Buckingham did it as well, but I never saw him do it in person. The international rumor mill of the day swore that Vigneron jumped 5.60 on a 15' pole, but I never had that one confirmed for sure.

Tim, what was your PR on a 15-footer?

According to my old vault coach at Purdue, Noel Ruebel, "Monte Weller jumped 18 goddamned feet holding 14 goddamn 8"

but this is all purely hearsay as I have no idea if it was a 15' pole or if its even true or not. :)

I don't think Don Baird did it on a 15' pole. He has told me more than once over the years that he was gripping 15'1" or 15'2" when he pr'd at 18'3"-ish. I don't remember him using too many poles that were 490 or shorter while going for big heights. I can check with him. I owe him a phone call right now.

So I just had dinner with Don Baird (after watching Avatar 3D). The best he jumped with a 15' grip or less was 18'0" (or maybe 550) with a 14'9" grip. When he PR'd at 18'2" or 18'3" he was gripping 15'2".
