Leaping Lefties! Name the Goofy-Footed WR Holders!

Unread postby KirkB » Thu Feb 26, 2009 3:04 am

PP likes to make fun of lefties, but I happen to know some VERY good jumpers that are southpaws!

So here's a trivia quiz for you ...

Can you name all of the left-handed PV WR holders? Male and Female. There's a few!

I don't actually have the list, so I can't verify the exact results of this quiz. But let's just see where this goes ... maybe somebody has that master list!

Hey Kirk. I thought "goofy-footed" in vaulting referred to vaulters like Bruce Jenner who held the pole right handed but jumped off of there right leg (or vaulters that held lefty and jumped off their left foot). I wonder what the world record is for that kind of vaulting? Jenner went 4.80m.

Jenner really did that, eh?

Mark Edmond - an old vaulting buddy from the state of Washington did about 15-6 (4.72) that way in about 1968, so Jenner has him beat by just a bit. That technique's REALLY goofy! Talk about a locked bottom arm!

You might be right about that definition in regards to PV. Being snowbound in Canada :D, I took the snow-boarding definition, which is simply a left-footed boarder. (Reversing it to a right-foot takeoff vaulter.)

Not to stir the pot, but I've always considered RIGHT-handed (left foot takeoff) vaulters a little goofy! :) After all, if you kick a soccer ball best with your right leg, why wouldn't you jump off it, and swing it ... just like kicking a soccer ball!? :D

A little off subject, but maybe a good place for this. Early to mid 60s I saw a vaulter who carried right handed. At the plant he would release the bottom left hand, and re-grip with his left as the "new" top hand and jump leftie. I saw him vault many time (can't remember HS or college) and never once did I see him miss his grip. You really had to watch it several times to realize what he was doing, he made it look very smooth.

Dan

PS - His switch was made before he left the ground so it was legal.

I'm still waiting for an old-timer to mention the left-handed WR holder from back in the 1960s.

Any guesses?

Here's a hint for you ...

Take a look at the vaulter just before the 1:00 minute marker (1968 Olympics).
