and for you short vaulters who think you have a disadvantage he was short also.
His plant was very high at the moment of the take-off
His plant was in the box to create a negative bend that when it bounced back he had a positive curve in the pole. The momne tof takeoff was at the time that occurred just before the pole hit the back of the box.
He generate power storage in the pole also from the swing and in most of his successful jumps his back was parallel to the ground before committing to the pull phase.

Best technician ever: Kjell Issakson
Best pole vaulter ever: Joe Dial
Joe could jump on the greatest range of pole sizes, with the greatest range of techniques, under the most conditions of any vaulter ever.

Scott Huffman - just because no one else would probably vote for him.
Seriously though - Dutch Warmerdam - if you know anything about pole vaulting, you know that what he accomplished was so far ahead of his time that he seemed superhuman.
You know what I'm gonna say.

Tarasov. Hands down. I have never seen someone jump so high so consistently while at the same time making it look so easy and so freakin smooth and graceful.

In either '97 or '98, Tarasov competed 26 times and jumped 5.90+ 24 times...his other two marks were 5.85 & 5.60.

I'm not saying he's the best ever (obviously), but didn't hartwig have a streak of times vaulting 19'+ for a while? Or did I just make this up?
