About to transition to 15'7 pole advice on making it easier?

Unread postby CarlPV » Sun Mar 16, 2014 6:54 pm

Age: 18
Grade: Senior
How long you have been jumping: Currently my 3rd year
What pole you are on (length and weight rating): 15 foot 180 (15.8 flex)
How high you are gripping: 14'6
What bar(s) you are attempting in the video: 17'0
Video: https://www.dropbox.com/s/0969oc1dev6a6 ... MG6168.MOV

I just finished a meet and had a close attempt at 17 feet. I have been wanting to move to a 15'7 foot pole for a while now. What 15'7 should I go to and any advice to make the transition easy?

How much are you wanting to move your grip up to the first 15'7 pole? What flex differences are your 15ft poles?

Plan to eventually grip towards the top. But will start at a 14'6 grip and gradually go up. My 15 foot poles range from 17.0-15.8

Well a 15ft 15.8 is going to be equivalent to a 15'6 18.2. That's why I was asking what your flex differences were on your other poles... I'm assuming .6? (17.0, 16.4, 15.8?)
So if that's the case and you want to keep it at .6 then you would want a 15'6 17.6. Move your grip up 1.5 to 2 inches at the most and it should feel just like your 15ft pole, just a longer pole. If you keep it at 14'6 its going to feel a lot stiffer! In my experience people who have problems with poles is the guys that move up .6 in flex and then try to grip 3-4 inches higher. Now the pole feels like wet noodle and everything is slow and they think they just have to get used to the timing. You have to go to stiffer poles to grip up.
I'm going to pick on you, because towards the top is a very vague statement, I make fun of my high school club kids when they say that. To hold towards the "top", lets say 15'2, You would need to probably be on a 15'6 15.6. If you are jumping 16'6 gripping 14'6, then you can definitely jump 17ft on a 15'6 17.4 with 2 inches more grip.

15'0 15.8= 14'6 grip
15'6 17.4= 14'8
15'6 16.8= 14'10
15'6 16.2= 15'0
15'6 15.6= 15'2
