Steps vs. Strides

Unread postby Skyin' Brian » Mon Jan 24, 2005 10:43 pm

ok, this is just something i notice when vaulters talk about their approaches.

I usually refer to my approach in the total strides as in 8 strides = 4 lefts
or my full approach is 16 strides

ive heard vaulters talk about running from a 7 step approach which does not really make sense. why do two strides equal a "step" quoting it in lefts(or rights) makes more sense than saying steps, but how does this relate to vaulters who start with their run with a right if they are right handed. his full approach may be 15 strides or 17 strides, etc.

so, from now on all vaulters must refer to their run in strides just to make me happy ;)

what is your opinion/practice on this?

To me a stride is 2 steps!

When I am at school and in my training log I refer to m run by every step (so 8 steps which is 4 lefts). When I am talking to other people they just get confused so I use LEFTS, that way no one is confused.

Strides are strides. Therefore, I too feel that everyone should refer to their total number of strides taken.....not lefts. I think lefts suck. :D

I do this, and i use the "left" system....just for some people who i feel are priveleged (lol, j/k), i will just tell them something like 5 1/2 lefts, but often just find myself telling them 6 instead, if there is no reason to tell them otherwise.

I count every left step that I take in accending order (1,2,3,4...). Before then, I would count every left in sets of three:
1-2-3 1-2-3 ...
or 1-2 1-2-3 ...
or 1 1-2-3 ...

I use rights. However, I count down so if I ever add a step on I move my hands at the same step.

not sure what this means, but i was really just referring to this as a communication thing proposing that everyone refer to their run in strides...yeah, the topic doesnt matter, but i believe that poles and run do matter quite a bit :)

I use "lefts", as it is the only really clear term. Using steps and strides can get confusing as different folks have different meanings for them.

for me 6 lefts = 6 strides = 12 steps

but that's just me
