Jeff Vaughn, Hays Consolidated HS (Buda TX), around '90: ~15'6" grip for a 10'6". Fortunately he was a decathlete.

8 inches shy of a 5 foot push off.

I don't know if there is a word to describe that, but WOW.

Actually, just 6 inches shy of a 5 foot push-off. At any rate, he was amazing!

Neat thread. Joe was certainly a great vaulter. A lot of old school guys jumped big push offs as grips weren't really pushed that much then. My first 18' jump was in 1978 gripping 14' 10" in a vault meet/exhibition. In 1999, my then athlete Borya Celentano, jumped 18' 1" on a 15' pole. Unlike Borya, I couldn't carry that efficiency over with higher grips. I’ve known of and seen many similar feats on shorter poles.

We did have a couple of decathletes I "adopted" when I first got to UC Irvine that capped 4.90 to 5m poles with PRs under 14'. Both got turned around but that was my first experience with massive inefficiency. Get this – they said they held high because they were afraid to get upside down. I would have been afraid to have that little spatial awareness and grip 5m. LOL!! Bubba

Gotta be Bubka - 5.10m grip to 6.14m and he's certainly had more height than that on many jumps? Obviously I could be wrong. Just guessing.

Not directly related to the push off but relevant to having big height, I saw him gripping down on a 5.20m pole jumping at a 6.30m bungee in practice in Atlanta before he withdrew from the Olympics. The most amazing thing I saw was at the Sunkist Invitational in 1992 when he got the first 6m on US soil. The bar was at 5.70m and he was about to come in and was allowed a run through. The bar was left up and he made it by about 1.5' in baggy gray sweats from 16 steps. Unreal!! Bubba

If you use the 6m club stats on this site, Tim Mack has a bigger push off on his 6.01 jump (6.01m holding at 5.00m) than bubka did on his 6.15 jump (6.15m holding 5.18m). I have no idea about his 6.14 jump. if he was holding 5.10m, that would definitely beat it!
