Pulling to Swing

Unread postby pv170 » Mon Feb 13, 2017 1:46 pm

I am looking for a new drill for practicing the swing part of the vault. I usually have my kids do swings drills and bubka's on a squat rack at the school because that is closest thing I have to a high bar and there is no way I am going to be able to take them anywhere with a highbar.

The reason I am looking for a new drill is because they keep initiating there swings by pulling down on the pole, killing the rotation of the pole and causing there hips to be stuck. I try my best to watch them when they do the drills, but hard for me to see them pulling during the drill. So just looking for something new to try with them and something that will really show them when they pull.

I do not have access to an indoor pit from practice and because of construction at our school, may not have a outdoor pit for least another month. So looking for something away from the pit.

Thanks!

Grass and sand. Take the kids to the long jump pit. Show them how to swing correctly on a pole, and then slowly raise the grip and lengthen the run. My junior high kids spend just as much time in the sand and grass as they do the pit.

One handed: I'm not a huge fan of this drill, but if a kid won't stop pulling on the pole, then have them try one-handed.

As always, encourage them to push the pole.
