how should you run tall or leaning forward

Unread postby Ethan » Mon Jun 25, 2007 8:04 pm

i have been told a couple ways to run from both good and experienced coaches i've heard you want to be tall all the way down the runway. i've also heard lean forward into the run and push out of the back that way hit straight and are able to run threw the takeoff. I don't know what do you guys think. what would be the petrov model of the run.

TALL!!!! I've been coached by Dan Pfaff a couple of times throughout this last track season, whom is one of the most well known, and well respected track coaches in the world, coaching 33 olympians so far. Every time he coaches me, he says it every time, that he wants me to run taller. So, I can't stress this enough to where if Dan says it, I know I gotta do it!

definatly run tall. Yeah, you need to be leaning foreward as you accelerate, but after a stride or so you should be up tall and powering into the plant! Tall run --> tall plant!

i say try to combine the two...run tall and lean forward...the leaning forward allows for a deeper bend of the pole on the plant but you can't get your plant up without running tall..so combine them!

Go to www.willamettestriders.com and copy the Dynamic Warmups page. Follow the sequence of drills for warmups everyday and you will run better.

This doesn't even make sense. How does leaning forward allow the pole to bend deeper at take-off? And what does "deeper bend" mean?

Now it is almost impossible to initiate a run without some forward lean. But if you run properly you can accelerate into a full run without leaning forward for very long or very much. You certianly never want to lean forward at your plant.

Please run TALL and don't lean forward to get a "Deeper" bend! As posted earlier, your run will start with a slight lean to get the ball rolling, but after that you need to have good, tall posture.

Definitely DO NOT COMBINE the two. Push out of the back hard, accelerate to your mid, be as tall as possible and get your feet down as fast as you can from the mid in.........

Tall and slow is better than fast and low - every time. I cannot emphasize how important it is to be as tall as humanly possible at takeoff. Anything that you do in your run has to help in achieving this goal. Of course, tall and fast is best, but in the vault it can take years to achieve full speed at full height.

Run tall

RUN TALL!!!

A common thing high school vaulters do is we put our own twist on things that may work at the moment but is inncorrect and hurts you in the future.

YOu want to run tall to raise your center of gravity but your main goal should be to RUN RELAX

RUN RELAX
MAX CONTROLLED SPEED
AS LITTLE EXCESS MOVEMENT AS POSSIBLE

don't pump your arms much don't be tight.
and keep your knees high also.

i'm 99% sure i'm right but i could be wrong

You are 100% right, but let me add to your statements: You should run tall to keep your COM high, to allow your knees to get up easier, to carry correctly, to prepare for jumping, and, most importantly, you are in position to MAXIMIZE THE POLE ANGLE AT TAKE-OFF! I am very suprised that that has not been said. I don't know, maybe I missed it.
