Elite Competitions on Friday

Here is what I hear:

There will be two elite mens vaults on Friday evening at 6:30 for the "National Level" and 7:45 for the "Elite" both fields will be small and should move quickly. There will be no college men on Friday evening.

I do not know anything about whether or not there is an emerging elite women's group on Friday. My guess is no because if you exclude college and high school women, there won't be enough people to fill a second field.

On a related note: Who knows which elites are coming (or not coming) to Reno?

I know that April Steiner is not coming (she'll be on her honeymoon) and Kate Soma is not coming. I hear that Brad Walker will be there but not jumping.

I know Brian Mondschein will be there jumping for Pole Vault Power :D

I think at least some of the masters groups are Friday night as well.

Are you serious??? Well, okay, thanks. Yeah, my coach was trying to figure out whether he would be jumping while the elites were jumping or not? I guess we'll find out when we get there!

It's not unusual for some of the better vaulters to come out late in an Olympic year. I've worked with some who skip indoors completely in an Olympic year. My preference is to jump indoors, to see where they are, take a break from comps and get back to training, and then come out again for Mt. Sac (mid April) or Modesto (mid May). If you're on the bubble you've got to start early and stay with it.

BTW - anyone know which elite girls are jumping? Bubba

No clue (other than what I posted at the beginning of the thread). Everyone I have talked to said they haven't heard anything and they don't know what is going on, so maybe the field will be decided when we get there.

When I was actively working with elites in SoCal they brought the top 10 men and women in a day early for meetings and then determined who was jumping and who wasn't. They then filled the field with the top of the emerging elites. In any case I'm sure it will be awesome! Bubba

Yeah that's pretty much still how they do it, but Greg is a little more proactive than Coach Fraley was about it I guess. Coach Fraley liked to make them sweat and make sure they came to the meetings before he would let them be on stage.

Now that you say that I remember Coach Fraley keeping them on the edge. When I was working with Borya Celentano I was at the Thursday meetings on time and Borya wasn't - WOW - explosion!! He almost didn't let him jump with the elites. The message was clear - we paid your way and you'd better be here and on time.
